Geography & community.

Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph are separate JBSA locations, and Camp Bullis introduces another distinct duty geography. San Antonio is the metropolitan center; Universal City and Schertz are useful reference communities for the northeastern part of the region. The River Walk and historic missions are civilian cultural destinations, not evidence that a particular housing option suits every JBSA work site.

This free regional guide supports a location comparison. Use the installation profiles below for each destination’s identity, public organizations, specific resources and reporting considerations.

Climate & seasonal considerations.

South-central Texas heat can shape unloading, school routines and outdoor plans. Heavy rain, thunderstorms and occasional winter disruption also warrant preparation. Check the actual forecast and local alerts rather than assuming every Texas move involves the same conditions.

Use current official weather and road information for the actual journey. A regional climate description or illustration describes the setting; it does not predict the conditions on the household’s arrival day.

Regional housing research

Identify Fort Sam Houston, Lackland or Randolph before comparing a JBSA home. A general San Antonio address does not establish the route to the gaining organization. Ask the housing office which process serves the household, then compare school, care and spouse-work routes with lease obligations, utilities and temporary lodging needs.

Schools & childcare

JBSA's different locations make address-specific school research essential. Use the School Liaison to identify the responsible district and transfer contacts for each candidate home. Request childcare separately from school enrollment, and compare pickup arrangements with the actual work site rather than assuming one joint-base label means one daily route or enrollment authority.

Healthcare & TRICARE

Use the official JBSA medical directory and TRICARE to identify the right care-transfer and referral contacts. Distinguish the installation's different locations when asking where appointments occur. San Antonio's medical community is extensive, but a nearby facility does not establish coverage, eligibility or a confirmed appointment for the household's continuing treatment needs.

Spouse employment & education

A spouse's San Antonio employment search may lead to a different part of the city from the service member's JBSA location. Compare both schedules with care and transportation before choosing housing. Use official employment assistance and SECO, then confirm Texas licensing requirements with the responsible board for any regulated profession.

Family support across the region

Use JBSA newcomer and family-support resources, while keeping the specific service and gaining organization visible in each inquiry. Ask the sponsor which steps are shared and which are location-specific. Housing, reporting and household assistance may involve different offices; record the responsible site instead of assuming that visiting one welcome office completes every requirement.

Attractions & community life

The San Antonio River Walk provides a civilian introduction to the city's riverfront and architecture, separate from JBSA facilities. Consult the city's official information to choose a section and current visitor approach. The River Walk is a regional attraction, not a feature immediately beside every Fort Sam, Lackland or Randolph work site or proposed home.

Transportation & PCS arrival

Fort Sam Houston, Lackland and Randolph are different destinations within the San Antonio region. Compare the household's actual duty component with each proposed home, school and care stop before choosing a routine. An airport transfer or general JBSA map point does not identify every reporting office; obtain the gaining organization's current directions for the final approach.

A domestic move across local boundaries.

Connect the proposed address with the responsible school, utility providers and licensing authority. State and local boundaries can matter even when two homes appear close on a regional map. Use the receiving offices for requirements and the gaining organization for actual reporting instructions.

If moving with pets, separate transport acceptance from destination entry requirements. USDA APHIS pet-travel resources ↗ identify official destination starting points; check the responsible destination authority and transport provider before making a commitment.
