Geography & community.

Jacksonville's St. Johns River and Atlantic coastline create different daily settings within one large city. NAS Jacksonville is on the river side, while Naval Station Mayport is near the coast. A shared regional research process helps families compare schools, care and employment without treating the two naval stations as interchangeable reporting destinations.

This free regional guide supports a location comparison. Use the installation profiles below for each destination’s identity, public organizations, specific resources and reporting considerations.

Climate & seasonal considerations.

Northeast Florida has humid summers, heavy rain and tropical-weather exposure, with cooler conditions possible in winter. Coastal wind, surf and water conditions need separate attention from the temperature forecast. Follow official beach and emergency information when planning the first local outings.

Use current official weather and road information for the actual journey. A regional climate description or illustration describes the setting; it does not predict the conditions on the household’s arrival day.

Regional housing research

Begin with the actual duty site before comparing a coastal, river-side or other Jacksonville address. Ask the appropriate housing office about current applications and off-base assistance. Evaluate both adults' routes, childcare and school needs together with lease and utility responsibilities; a city-wide Jacksonville label or proximity to water does not establish a workable daily routine.

Schools & childcare

Check the assigned school and enrollment requirements for the specific proposed home, with School Liaison support for transfer questions. Keep childcare requests separate from school registration. The distance between the coast, the river and another part of Jacksonville makes pickup arrangements worth checking against the actual work site rather than a general city or regional Navy address.

Healthcare & TRICARE

Use the official Navy medical directory and TRICARE to establish the household's care-transfer process and referral contacts. Ask where each recurring appointment would actually occur in Jacksonville before incorporating it into a housing decision. A named nearby facility does not establish eligibility or available care, so retain instructions for prescriptions, therapies and unresolved specialty needs.

Spouse employment & education

Compare a spouse's prospective work site and schedule with the household's care and transportation arrangements, since that route may differ from either naval station commute. Use Fleet and Family Support and SECO to organize employment or education research. Check Florida licensing requirements directly for regulated work, and obtain employer approval for any remote-work relocation.

Family support across the region

Use Fleet and Family Support and the gaining installation's relocation directory for household assistance. Ask the sponsor which newcomer and reporting steps apply to the command named on the orders. Keeping NAS Jacksonville and Mayport explicit in each request prevents a shared regional support network from becoming a mistaken assumption that every appointment happens at the same site.

Attractions & community life

Jacksonville's public St. Johns Riverwalks offer a river-city experience, while Little Talbot Island State Park provides a separate coastal outing. Use the city and Florida State Parks visitor resources for current access and conditions. Neither destination establishes unrestricted use of naval waterfront, a property's water access or safe swimming on the household's intended day.

Transportation & PCS arrival

Obtain the gaining command's reporting address, current authorized approach and first-night arrangement before departure. Keep the airport transfer and contact for itinerary changes separate from permanent housing plans. Use current weather and installation directions; a general Jacksonville destination or regional globe point is not a gate address for both naval stations.

A domestic move across local boundaries.

Connect the proposed address with the responsible school, utility providers and licensing authority. State and local boundaries can matter even when two homes appear close on a regional map. Use the receiving offices for requirements and the gaining organization for actual reporting instructions.

If moving with pets, separate transport acceptance from destination entry requirements. USDA APHIS pet-travel resources ↗ identify official destination starting points; check the responsible destination authority and transport provider before making a commitment.

Continue the research.
